Introduction
From time to time, corporate executives encounter ethical dilemmas that seem rather challenging. In this text, I concern myself with an ethical dilemma faced by the top leadership of Nutritional Foods Inc. In so doing, I will amongst other things explain (in detail) the actions I would take were I to find myself in a similar scenario. I will also explain not only the reasoning behind my actions, but also the results I would be expecting.
Case Scenario: Brief Overview Nutritional Foods Inc., a company that manufactures healthful products, has a major problem to address. Some of the company's products are allegedly responsible for a number of acute food poisoning cases. The problem has escalated from just a few cases of food poisoning to dozens of other reported cases. The company's chief executive, Fred James, has convened an emergency meeting comprising of members of the Crisis Action Committee. The key agenda of the meeting is how the situation that is threatening to get out of hand should be handled.
Discussion
From the onset, it is important to note that James and his vice president for production, John Healy, could have possibly prevented the scenario from escalating into a fully blown crisis by addressing the issue early enough. In my opinion, the company's top leadership should have acted during the second stage of the scenario, i.e. after concern deepened. The company's topmost executives instead chose to adopt the 'wait and see' stance.
The Court should deny a defendant’s motion to dismiss a case if its facts are “plausibly suggestive of a claim entitling the pleader to relief." Henderson. The title and design elements of Prairie Foods’ “Complete Blueberry Pomegranate” cereal packaging violate California’s ban against “untrue or misleading” advertising. Therefore the Court should deny Prairie Foods’ motion to dismiss Sabach v. Prairie Foods, Inc.
Thank you so much for your response! Yes, great minds do think alike! I completely agree that the corrective action and mortification is the two best strategies for a crisis such as this one. I believe that James E. Burke, CEO of Johnson & Johnson was open to all communication, not only with consumers, but with the FDA and the FBI as well. That is good that you have not experienced a crisis at your current organization. Do you believe you are well prepared if a crisis occurs?
Moreover, managers with enlightened self-interests believe that a good organizational reputation amongst their customers and suppliers will provide long-lasting finical gains and added benefits to the company (Johnson, 2013, p. 128). However, in the current work environment, it is noticeable that companies or upper management that are even accused of unethical behaviors cause controversy and a dip in sales or a loss in customers. The strategy of maintaining ethically minded is critical to a company’s success, especially when faced with added internal and external pressures, like stakeholders who are only interested in making profits by any means. However, in 2003, when the concerns with childhood obesity began to arise, Kraft recognized their social obligation, began to use their platform to attempt to draw awareness to the issue (Lewin, Lindstrom, & Nestle, 2006, p.
A food contamination issue has surfaced in New England. One of our potato salad mixtures has been tested positive with bacteria and already two people have gotten sick from it. So how should we handle a crisis on this level? The mantra for this plan is honesty, transparency, and liability. The contamination is on us, so we need to rebuild our brand and reestablish trust. More importantly, we need to work as quickly as possible.
Over the past 5 years the market has seen an enormous increase in the sports nutritional product category. These products range from energy drinks and nutritional bars to diet products and nutritional supplements, and each day new products are being introduced into the market. With nutrition and taste being two of the most important aspects of the product, creating and maintaining products in this category is simplified. This has become one of the most exciting new markets not only because it is the beginning of a new wave of a product category but because the market and consumer base is large and ready to be tapped into. The market is increasingly becoming more and more energetic,
Whole Foods is one of the largest organic food stores in the industry. During the years of 2007 – 2008, the company has been undergoing criticism and reluctance from the customers and the employees. There was tension between the financial growth, social value, and brand image of the company, the critiques argued. Their argument is that the CEO, John Mackey has forgotten the core values on which the firm’s foundation was laid, and that the organization is focussing just on the profits and capitalizing the company. Mackey, on the other hand, describes this system as “conscious capitalism”.
The Whole Foods Inc was founded in 1980 by john Mackey, from a local supermarket store on safe grocery. Since then, it has grown into the world’s largest retail store all kinds of organic and natural foods. As of 2004, the annual sales were recorded as $8 billion. It has approximately 264 stores in the USA, 6 in Canada and 5 in the United Kingdom (Thomson, 2010). The headquarters are located on an 80,000 square feet flagship store in Austin, Texas. Over the years, the organization has had its fare shares of issues both in the internal and external environment, admitted by its CEO John Mackey. He said that the retail enterprise had 2008 as its toughest years yet. The following year, whole foods recorded its first decrease in the first quarter report.
The market is a place where companies’ intentions are focused on one thing and that is making the biggest profit possible. So it is to no surprise that duped exchanges are a common trend in the market. Nowadays it’s a competitive world in the market and everybody is doing what they feel they need to do to stay ahead of the competition. So unfortunately exchanges like this come with the territory and it happens across all industries including the food industry. In the 2008 documentary Food Inc. examples of duped exchanges within the food industry are on display, and while I believe there is no place for them within the food industry or the market for that matter it happens anyway due to consumers being led astray by companies.
Technology and industrialization of the food industry have changed how food is grown, and altered its nutritional value. Multinational organizations are making decisions that affect the health and prosperity of people worldwide. These organizations have found ingenuous ways of packaging and marketing unsafe products to the public. Education and awareness of the problems are the only hope for improving the food industry and the quality of food.
Fast food company’s pride themselves on making orders and food in a timely fashion as well as providing high quality food and an atmosphere for all, but what happens when a huge crisis happens and it ends in lawsuits. Our weight-obsessed culture leads many of us to believe that all of our problems would be solved if only we could trim off a few pounds of fat. Think twice before you make the choice to pursue weight loss. Do what is right for the health of your body without falling prey to the perils of trying to achieve someone else's unrealistic and unhealthy size. For individuals who do need to lose weight for improved health, refocus on lifetime weight management and avoid the "quick fix" approach for the best long-term success. Healthy eating means choosing a variety of foods from the basic food groups: meat and meat substitutes, dairy, fruits and vegetables, grains, and a limited amount of fat and sweets. As simple as this sounds, it’s not always easy to get the nutrition you need. Healthy eating requires planning, purpose and effort to include a variety of foods in your meals.
