Whether groups are formed for social or task oriented purposes, the ability to produce and maintain a sense of affiliation, peer support and collaboration is important for overall group functioning. The cohesion of a social group is produced through the establishment of a set of group norms, which are later defined as a guide for conduct accepted within a group of individuals. However, in order for a group to perform and produce results, the team leader should guide his/her team through the proper stages of group development, which includes the following steps: forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning. The groups that are formed as adolescents often determine group associations as adults and define an individual within their social group that will either set them with or against other groups. In the famous movie, “The Breakfast Club,” we see how five teenagers, each a member of a different high school clique, spends a Saturday in detention together and realize that they are all more than their respective stereotypes. High school cliques determine who, what and where students belong. The typical high school has "cliques"; which are groups of students with similar interests that hang out together. When looking at what really goes on in the average high school, and how friendships are formed, it is amazing. When observing the jock, the nerd and the popular kids, one must wonder where they fit in and how these groups will affect the future.

One of the major themes in The Breakfast Club is role confusion. The movie focuses on five students from different cliques and backgrounds. The students start off in the beginning of the movie as strangers. They are all identified in specific cliques in school; the jock, the popular girl, the nerd, the loner, and the troublemaker. Each member identifies with their clique and group but it is only as the students’ get to know each other they realize they are not so different after all.
Bruce Tuckman suggests that there are four stages of team development; Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing. At the forming stage, the team needs to mature and allow relationships to establish. Everyone’s position is currently unclear so the leader must be ready to answer questions and give a lot of guidance. The storming stage is where goals need to be set. At this stage each team member is trying to establish themselves within the group however this can cause friction and power struggles. Emotional issues need to be ignored in order to achieve goals. At the norming stage, the team members are clear on what their role within the group contains. They’ve gained respect for their leader and other members in the group and make decisions together.

The disagreements that happen in the first two stages have decreased, and roles within the team have been firmly established. Also, the aims and objectives set by the leader are done without disagreement. Big decisions are made by group agreement. Smaller decisions may be given to individuals or small teams within group. Commitment and harmony within the team is strong, meaning they are working well together. The team may engage in fun and social activities, and therefore forming better relationships between people. I compare it to an actual performance—this is the stage of a performance where are all the scripts are finished and the acting begins. In more literal terms, the performing stage is when everyone in the team starts acting towards the goal. By this point, the team members are more comfortable with each other. At this point, the team leader isn’t involved in any decision making. It is wholly up to the team to work on the project at hand and to reach their goal.
