Assignment 3: Personal Development Plan Christine Rigava School of Arts and Humanities, Edith Cowan University PSY6800 Psychological Science of Wellbeing Cindy Branch-Smith Facilitator Group 6: Clare Schur 24 th April 2023
To Develop Academic Self-Efficacy to Foster PERMA, gain a Postgraduate Degree to Become a School Counsellor in NSW. A self-development plan can be described as an assessment tool embedded in the bigger picture of the assessment cycle to develop knowledge, skills and experience, as learning is a lifelong process (Beausaert et al., 2011). It is a way of identifying areas for personal and professional performance, improvement and accomplishment through the process of analysing one’s strengths. By conducting a SWOT analysis, developing SMART goals and constructing an action plan, this can be achieved through identified goals based on psychological frameworks which will prove beneficial to my personal well- being. When I became a mother, I went back to work part-time; I then realised that my current role as a primary school teacher was no longer fulfilling and no longer provided me with a sense of meaning. I lacked engagement, experienced limited professional relationships and I realised that I needed to change my career. Growing up, we had a core belief within my family that education was important, valuable and imperative. My mother was forced to cease her high school education to care for her younger siblings; she always held onto resentment of never gaining the education she so deeply desired, yet her siblings were afforded the privilege. Hence, my mother instilled in my siblings and me the importance of education and, for that reason, I decided to enrol in a postgraduate degree in psychology, to retrain as a school counsellor, as I have found that I am passionate about helping people. To achieve this goal, I need to develop academic self-efficacy to gain a sense of accomplishment, meaning in life, establish professional relationships and foster positive emotions in completing postgraduate study. The research concludes that self-efficacy has a positive impact on the well-being of university students who consequently experience high levels of engagement and life satisfaction ( Shamsul Siddiqui, 2015). The PERMA model pertains to five elements; Positive emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishment, that contribute to satisfaction and well-being with the conceptualisation
of flourishing (Seligman, 2012). The five elements of PERMA, provide personal and professional satisfaction in life and optimal well-being. Specifically, the aspect of Accomplishment within the PERMA model are defined as mastery, achievement and competence (Madeson, 2021). It encompasses elements of perseverance, striving to achieve goals and being intrinsically motivated to do better and succeed, which ultimately leads to life fulfilment and a sense of great purpose, positively impacting well- being. Specifically linked to the area of accomplishment, one can begin to address and unpack self- efficacy within Social Cognitive Theory (SCT). Self-efficacy is the theory concerned with how an individual perceives their own ability to rise to a challenge, to succeed and to perform tasks competently ( Ackerman., 2021) . A SWOT analysis is used to determine areas for improvement and development, to identify and understand strengths and opportunities and confidently formulate a specific course of action. Subsequently, assessment can resolve weaknesses and impediments shifting development focus towards correcting and minimising potential mitigations. ( Gürel, 2017). Strengths Weaknesses Passionate about a change of career Passionate about helping people. Extrinsic motivation-more professional flexibility in the future. Intrinsic motivation-desire for learning. Sound understanding of teaching and school system. Compassionate and empathetic Broad life experiences Relatable to a wide demographic Fixed mindset and self-doubt Minimal psychological content knowledge-new information to be learned. I have a core belief that I am not academically capable of high achievement. Mum-guilt with my young family. Economic-need to work part-time rather than study full-time. Opportunities Threats Feedback from facilitators to continually improve (aligned with verbal persuasion). School Counsellor in Training Sponsorship program. Use of Learning Advisor. Accessing tools such as Studiosity. Discussion and interaction with peers. Engage with a mentor. Inability to achieve reasonable study-life balance. Not achieving a 70% or higher WAM. Family commitments-young children. Lack of time. Lack of organisation. Loss of motivation due to poor results. Economic factors- need to work part-time. rather than study full-time.
By conducting a SWOT analysis, I concluded my reasoning for wanting to become a School Counsellor. I want to be able to connect and form relationships and help people with their psychological well-being, whilst engaging in a career that is meaningful and I am passionate about (Seligman, 2012). I am an empathetic and compassionate person who has experienced many varied events in my life causing grief and trauma, which I believe makes me relatable. My experience as a teacher in the primary school setting for over 15 years also provided me with a sound understanding of policy and processes in the NSW schooling system. While drawing on areas of weakness within my SWOT analysis, I determined areas where development is required. I believe that there are numerous skills that can be developed such as improving my academic writing and learning more psychological content by completing extra reading regarding models and theories. The weakness which I believe are the most malleable is my perception of my ability to achieve academically and my personal self-doubt. Such self-doubting and lack of confidence in one’s abilities can be defined as self-efficacy or lack thereof. Perceived self-efficacy is a key determinant of achievement, regardless of underlying skills (Bandura, 1994). Furthermore, defined a s an optimistic confidence in one`s abilities or the possibility of successfully completing a task and achieving a desired outcome ( Akhtar, 2008) . Using Social Cognitive Theory and self-efficacy, one can develop academic self-efficacy to achieve a goal of becoming a school counsellor to gain a sense of accomplishment and positive emotions. Developing academic self-efficacy will provide a sense of accomplishment, engagement and foster positive emotions, beneficial to my well-being and academic performance (Seligman, 2012). Initially, SMART goals must be established and defined. These are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound steps towards achieving a pre-defined goal. The impact of SMART goals can be afforded to the ability to clarify and redefine relationships towards work and effort leading to personal
