Business Ethics Task 1:
Organizational Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility

A.
Corporate Policies – A1. Rationale
All bonuses will be paid annually, in the first quarter, and based on the previous year's sales, revenue, and production goals.
If bonuses are more structured and controlled, they would have less of an impact on the facility’s
financial condition, which would provide the means necessary to correct other problems the facility is experiencing. Those hired for hourly, full time employment must maintain an average of 32-40 hours per week,
unless changing status to part-time is agreed upon by the employee. Treating employees with respect and equality is crucial in creating the workplace culture Techfite's Corporate facility is known for, and this location hopes to achieve. Showing employees that they are appreciated will be helpful in improving employee morale and making it
a great place to work.
An event committee will be established to coordinate and oversee any events planned within the community, and will also be responsible for allocating the funds budgeted for this each year.
Having a specific group of individuals to focus on commitments to the community and ensure we are following through on those commitments will help to build a strong presence in the community, and improve the corporate culture. A2.
Ethical Versus Legal Issues
Unethical actions are not necessarily illegal. As a matter of fact, most actions perceived as wrong or unfair are well within the parameters of the law, so are not punishable by law. Unethical practices primarily affect employee morale, retention, quality, and client satisfaction, whereas illegal practices are punishable by law, so can result in fines and lawsuits
as well as reduced employee morale, retention, quality, and client satisfaction. All companies that engage in either unethical or illegal business practices will ultimately suffer from a damaged reputation as well as a significant loss of profitability. A3. Ethical Issues In the Scenario
The company made commitments to sponsor events in the community, and are now unsure of their financial ability to follow through on those commitments.

Wambui had been managing the budget department for Faida Bank. Because the work experience gained here was useful, much of the budget analysis work done in the department was performed by a group of management trainees. The trainees tended to be recent college graduates who were ambitious; they expected the budget work experience to be the pathway into the prestigious auditing department.
Wambui managed under the assumption that by maintaining an open-door policy her employees would bring any problems to her attention. As a result, she remained in her office and seldom met with the trainees. Instead she would peruse the budget reports they submitted and return them to her secretary without comment.
The reports often bore numerous errors which the trainees would be expected to make but which Wambui’s quick persual of the documents did not catch. The department heads throughout Faida Bank who received the erroneous reports would complain directly to the trainee who…

EL Greco Corporation was expanding its operation in its construction business and trading activities. Most of the employees come from technically trained manpower due to the nature of the work. The management feels that they need to hire new and fresh executives to beef up the growing workforce.
A non-technical executive in the person of Roger Enrique Gil was added to the working teams of managers. He was assigned as assistant to the President and Chief Executive Officer. The work of Mr. Enrique Gil covers the analysis of manpower programs and cost-related activities and gives advice to the president on some management aspects that are not generally handled by line managers.
The appointment of Mr. Enrique Gil was not received well by older managers. They felt that an insider should have been placed instead as Assistant to the President. Mr. Enrique Gil had difficulty getting some important information from the managers, without the expressed orders from the President. Nevertheless, Mr.…

Rio Tinto is a mining and minerals company headquartered in London. The multibillion-dollar company employs over 98,000 people worldwide and operates
in more than 60 different sites in over 50 countries.
When the 2008 global recession hit it was clear that a reduction in workforce would be necessary for the company to survive, and 14,000 employees and
contractors were let go. HR had been involved in the initial business discussions and understood that the reduction in force (RIF) was necessary. For the first
time, Rio Tinto's HR used a coordinated approach globally. Previously, executives and HR directors in the individual business units would have all approached
the downsizing differently. But this time with a common approach, the downsizing took place in an efficient, ethical, and sensitive manner, using regional
severance policies and a comprehensive database and measurement tools to track the impact of the redirections. High-potential leaders and people with critical
skills were…

A Unique Training Program at UPS Mark Colvard, a United Parcel Manager in San Ramon, California, recently faced a difficult decision. One of his drivers asked for 2 weeks off to help an ailing family member. But company rules said this driver wasn’t eligible. If Colvard went by the book, the driver would probably take the days off anyway and be fired. On the other hand, Colvard chose to give the driver time off. Although he took some heat for the decision, he also kept a valuable employee.
Had Colvard been faced with this decision 6 months earlier, he says he would have gone the other way. What changed his thinking was a month he spent living in McAllen, Texas. It was part of a UPS management training experience called the Community Internship Program (CIP). During his month in McAllen, Colvard built housing for the poor, collected clothing for the Salvation Army, and worked in a drug rehab Center. Colvard gives the program credit for helping him empathize with employees facing crises…

After working as an assistant manager for two years, Rebecca Learner was promoted to the manager position. She did not have a degree from university, but she had over 15 years of experience in the restaurant industry. On her first day as manager, she met with the three assistant managers and all of the frontline employees to discuss ways they could take the restaurant forward. Some of the frontline employees expressed that customers often complained about several things such as hygiene, portion sizes, the appearance of the restaurant, employee uniforms, high labor turnover, and outdated menu items. Rebecca also asked customers what they liked and did not like about the restaurant. Taking all of the comments and suggestions into consideration, she started working with her frontline employees and managers on specific initiatives. They introduced new menu items, some of which were well received and others not so successful. They changed the tablecloths and plates, but the customers did…

“Carter Cleaning Company”
The Career Planning Program
Career planning has always been a pretty low-priority item for Carter Cleaning, since "just getting workers to come to work and then keeping them honest is enough of a problem," as Jack likes to say. Yet Jennifer thought it might not be a bad idea to give some thought to what a career planning program might involve for Carter. Many of their employees had been with them for years in dead end jobs, and she frankly felt a little badly for them: "Perhaps we could help them gain a better perspective on what they want to do," she thought. And she definitely believed that the store management group needed better career direction if Carter Cleaning was to develop and grow.
Question:
1. Outline and describe the career development program you would propose for the cleaners, pressers, counter people, and managers at the Carter Cleaning Centers.
