Review the “COE Lesson Plan,” paying special attention to how it aligned to Universal Design
for Learning (UDL) design. Describe how using an approach like UDL can assist you with
developing differentiated content to meet the needs of all students in an inclusive classroom
setting. Provide three examples of differentiated engagement strategies that would be of value to
students in the inclusive classroom and could be used in the multiple means of engagement
section of the lesson plan.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) helps teachers meet the needs of all students in their
classroom. UDL encourages teachers to incorporate various teaching methods to ensure each
student has an equal chance of success. Teachers should seek to engage students using various
strategies such as incorporating relevant content into student learning. For example, teachers can
choose material and activities that are personalized to the student’s lives, culturally relevant, or
socially relevant (Provide Multiple Means, n.d.). In the lesson plan, teachers can specify the
choices students have for learning. Furthermore, teachers can engage students by giving them
choices in things like the tools used to gather information and how they demonstrate
understanding (Provide Multiple Means, n.d.). The options for demonstrating understanding can
also be listed within the lesson plan. Provide Multiple Means (n.d.), also suggests that teachers
can increase student engagement by creating a safe space for learning to take place. This can be
creating a supportive classroom environment, varying the level of sensory stimulation, and
involving all students in classroom discussions. Teachers can lead and guide classroom
discussions so that all students can participate actively.
Provide Multiple Mean of Engagement.
