4-2: Case Study- Manager Eduardo Aingeal Wilson Southern New Hampshire University MBA 530 Leading People & Organizations Professor Shaps
Manager Eduardo- A Case Study At our current employer, a prosthetics company located in Tampa, Florida, Eduardo has recently been promoted from one of our individual contributors to manager. He has just undergone his first review, and there were some concerns and areas of improvement noted on this performance review that need to be addressed. In this feedback, it explains that Eduardo works too fast to come to solutions, as well as coming to these solutions alone and not using his team for ideas or valuable employee feedback. His behavior has caused what would be called a dictatorial leadership style, causing his employees to disconnect and feel less confident in him as a leader. Not only does this affect the department, but if not corrected, this problem could potentially affect external factors such as relationships with our stakeholders. Leadership Skills One skill that Eduardo could learn to improve his leadership skills is interpersonal, or communication skills. These skills allow you to communicate effectively and work in groups. Being as he is in a management or leadership position, there is a need for strong interpersonal skills. These skills include active listening, teamwork, motivating others, and being able to successfully manage conflict (Brower, 2024). By strengthening these skills, Eduardo will be able to be patient and hear other employees’ points of views and ideas, as well as delegate his work efficiently. Another skill that could be learned by Eduardo would be emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is understanding your and other peers’ emotions, allowing you to manage them (Landry, 2019). By developing these skills, Eduardo will be more able to become more self-aware in his areas of weakness as well as his strengths and be able to improve the way he works on a team. Lastly, Eduardo would need to develop strategic thinking skills. These skills are vital when managing or leading a company. As a part of management, you will be part of 1
strategic planning meetings and can provide beneficial feedback. Studies have shown that those who are strategic thinkers or are able to think strategically are some of the most successful and effective leaders in the workplace (Craig, 2018). Actionable Steps One actionable step that Eduardo could complete is partnering with a coach and completing a 360-degree review. What this would mean is that the coach would retrieve feedback from peers and employees that he manages and use that to improve his leadership skills (Rouvalis, 2023). Having an impartial view of what others see in him and what his strengths and weaknesses are can greatly influence the type of leader Eduardo will be and the way he communicates and interacts with others. The second actionable step would be to take this evaluation and use it to improve his strategic thinking. He can do so by completing formal training from the company in areas he needs to improve in. Harvard Business School states that you can use formal training to improve at your own pace as well as learn how to execute high level strategies (Stobeirski, 2020). Being a strategic thinker can make you a better leader. He can then better strategize on how he delegates tasks and how he and other co-workers work together as a team to reach goals rather than take it all on himself. Flywheel Effect After reading the 2001 article “Good to Great,” I know that the flywheel effect is a different approach at reaching a goal that instead of having one big goal, sets many small goals to reach the end goal. Doing so allows employees to see these successes and become even more motivated (Collins, 2001). The more Eduardo pushes on the flywheel, or improving his skills, the closer he will get to getting the flywheel to spin, reaching the end goal. Eduardo can utilize this 2
