There is a meaningful consent that needs to be addressed for electronic health information exchange (eHIE) to occur. It is aware and imperative that the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) must be followed in healthcare since this is a federal privacy law that sets a baseline of protection of healthcare information. There are divisions within HIPAA that have refined the correlation to secure health information. The Privacy rules require appropriate safeguards to protect healthcare information, setting limits to disclose certain information. This rule allows patients to obtain their own records. Security Rule requires safeguard for administrative, technical, or physical aspects ensuring confidentiality. The Enforcement Rule can contain provisions in relation to compliance into investigating penalties for violations. These are important aspects within HIPAA that have led to structure and an organized outcome to protect our patients. Mobile technologies have become helpful to physicians and patients in the sense that it is easier to provide access to patient's medical records in a safe and secure way. The value of having HIPAA applied to any organization is motivating them to maintain and improve security which improves the internal process and creates a positive patient outcome forming trust. The purpose of Notice of Privacy Practices (NPP) gives patients the right to know how their protected health information is disclosed and what their privacy rights are. HIPAA’s Breach Notification Rule notifies patients protected health information (PHI) is unsecure or disclosed to the wrong party. If there becomes a breach, it can lead to potential identity theft or internal/external security threats that can affect the organization financially and trust with patients and stakeholders. Although we continually use technology because of the efficiency while trying to minimize the security threats by aligning our belief around HIPAA compliance. This allows physicians, hospitals, and other healthcare providers to disclose protected health information
