Question

Where are specialized cells called heterocysts present?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Heterocysts are the specialized cells responsible for fixing nitrogen in case of nitrogen starvation in the organism. Dinitrogen present in the air is fixed using the enzyme nitrogenase. This enzyme is inactive in the presence of oxygen and thus microanaerobic environment is created in heterocysts.
