What does it mean to be an American? When this question comes to mind many people will have different points of view. Many people tend to classify being American as living in the country called North America. Some people think that being American means to be a person living in a free country. Others may also think that it means to be a person living in a free country, but not having everything come free to you. It's call liberty, which means not everything comes free, and not everything you want at any moment of the day can be done or can be given to you. All Americans can agree that America stand for freedom, equal opportunities, and rights accompanied with responsibilities. Every single person in North America is given the right to their own freedom when they are born. When people are born they automatically have the amendments applied to their life like, the right to bear arms, freedom of speech and religion, the right to assemble, and many more. No matter who you are and no matter where in the U.S.A. you are, these rights apply to you. To find other viewpoints on this essential question I went to my grandparents, Neil and Pat MacArthur, to hear their thoughts on the American identity. Then I asked myself, what do I view the American identity as? My grandparents are in their seventies and enjoy retirement yet you will never find either one of them twiddling their thumbs. My 74 year old grandfather is fire chief and to this day rushes off to fight fires and help in emergency medical situations. Running to our comfort zones when the judgement is a burden or too difficult will never facilitate change, but will just harbor the resentment of the marginalized while muffling their cries.
