Social media has a prominent role in everyone’s lives. It is one of many ways that people communicate. For example, Facebook, Instagram, twitter, texting, and email. Although some argue that social media eliminates an intimate face-to-face connection, social media has the power to create a progressive and important change in society. One example of a positive change though social media is the Black Lives Matter movement. Despite the fact that social media removes face-to-face connection, it has the power to create positive change in society and across the globe. Social media can bring people in far distance close together though a screen and a keyboard. Though several social media platforms, like twitter and Facebook, many people
A necessary and common fight for equality has been one that has survived throughout all of man’s existence. Due to recent racial divide and the product of racial profiling, a movement has risen up to combat these common issues. The most recent and most well-covered is the Black Lives Matter Movement. Even though it has been lauded by some media sources and individuals as the next great movement to champion for civil rights, the Black Lives Matter movement is not the same as the African-American Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s nor is it likely to be as successful. If the Black Lives Matter Movement continues with discrepancies in ideology, lack of clear leadership, and trends of hate, the movement is doomed to fail.
In the United States, there has been many cases of Racial injustice. From the beginning of the start of the United States of America it was the injustice to the Native Americans being captured and used for slave labor while their bison be slaughtered for sportsmanship. But this paper is on the specific race of the African Americans. There are many races that have been racially profiled and ostracized by the English people. But the treatment that African Americans have endured even till this day is disheartening. African Americans have gone through enslavement during the early 1600’s to the mid 1800’s. Then the African Americans were obstructed by the Jim Crow laws creating the ‘Separate but Equal” propaganda during the late 1800’s into the 1960’s. After the abolishment of the Jim Crow Laws, people were considered equal until the recent actions of many police officers using deadly force on African American youths in the early 2000’s.
Determining a new political direction for the entire movement that does not include continuing assimilation would be difficult since so many lesbians/gays/bisexuals (LGB) have already assimilated into the mainstream culture. However, that is exactly what the movement must do. It might seem beneficial to continue to assimilate, but assimilation only serves those who choose to police themselves and others. Even though many within the community have already decided to “integrate,” that does not mean that transgender, queer, and gender-nonconforming people have to as well. Even younger LGB can refuse to accept assimilation.
Black lives matter has become a great start to a new social justice movement across America. The support of this movement have grown ever so rapidly, since being founded in the summer of 2013. This social movement started the beginning of a fascinatingly new generational era of those represented in the black community, much of whom are the faces of society’s biggest victims of racial discrimination and oppression. The reason being is due to the fact of how this movement caught the public’s attention. That was through the power of the media, but most importantly social media. Many believe that cyberspace is what taints our generation’s mind by serving as a distraction which keeps us out of touch with realty. Though the founders of this movement
When a subculture enters into a society, most of the time their core values are not seen as important to the dominant group. The subculture’s values have a lower chance of being understood and their beliefs will always be blocked out as well as be pushed away. Take the Blavk Lives matter movement for example. Black Lives Matter not only increased African American unity, it was created to promote the importance of African American lives since lately they have been seen as not being important. In my opinion, ever since this movement was created and increased, there has been more hate toward the African American people. When the movement was first created is talked down upon by dominant groups and those people ever truly understood the meaning of this. In fact there has always been controversy over the movements meaning. People who were not a part of African American culture believed that were only promoting black lives and no one else. Instead African Americans were tired of their lives being taken away without much reason. The Black Lives Matter movement would be the result of a subculture coming together to broadcast to society their core values.
Discrimination is a struggle that African Americans know all too well. The Black Lives Matter strives to stand up for those wronged by society and also raise awareness to an issue that has surprisingly gone unresolved. The articles “ Black lives Matter: A movement takes shape”, and “ The condition of black lives is one of mourning “ both show the dire need for the black lives matter movement through a combination of appeals that allows them to draw attention to different aspects of the problems without having to directly say it.
What is truth and where can we find it? We are always thinking that one is right and one is wrong. But John Mill suggests that truth is going to be found in the middle somewhere as a combination .(Page 43). But if we are only hearing one side, we are limited and cannot find the truth. He believes that suppression is also wrong. In order to find the answer or the truth we must have an open dialogue. truth only comes after expression of our thoughts and expression of our narrative.
Racism is one of the most sensitive subjects being debated on a daily basis in the United States. It is also a subject that will always prove to be relevant for years to come. Throughout its short history, racism has played major roles in the development of this nation – from the slave trade days of the early 1600s up until the Black Lives Matter movement of today.
This article was written by Nathalie Baptiste and was about Black Live Matter and the movement that went along with it. The black lives movement started two years ago, after the tragedy of an unarmed teen being kill by a white officer. The protest began in the street of Ferguson, Missouri and spread to other major cities (par. 1). Due to having a black president in the office change was counted on from the black communities throughout the United States. The problem instead got worse more cases came along with white officers getting away with killing and violating innocent African Americans (par. 3).
When looking at current social movements it is important to understand how race, class, and the current political sphere intersect with current social environments. Because we have movements that are focused on systemic/longstanding social issues it is important to understand how decisions are made in reaction to these systemic problems and how public opinion is effected by them. The interplay between public opinion, culture, and political decisions are observed in each of the following articles. By looking at the Black Lives Matter movement, Occupy Wall Street, and articles analyzing how political movements affect political change, we hope to deepen our understanding of how social movements affect social interaction, which ultimately affects policy decisions in this country.
Black Lives Matter is an international activist movement, that speaks against racism , and violence towards black people. Black Lives Matter organization was founded by Opal Tometi, Patrisse Cullors and Alicia Garza. Black Lives Matter originated in 2012. Over a period of time, the black lives movement has revolutionized the world regardless of the policies. This movement has been known for their acts of protest and their will to not give up. This movement shows the need for people to voice their beliefs and how they feel about injustice. For example, after the cold-blooded murder of Trayvon Martin, many questions were left unanswered. What was his rights? There has been so many traumatizing experiences that black people had to withstand
The Black Lives Matter movement has swept across America. It 's branched out with chapters in over 31 cities and held rallies and boycotts across the United States(Sidner). The Black Lives Matter movement started with the outrage of the death of a young man. It continues to take over headlines and raise awareness on police brutality and inequality. However, the movement has met resistance from the All Lives Matter group. This group thinks that Black Lives Matter is a movement to express hatred towards other races. However, statistics, the views of fellow citizens, and the overall purpose of the Black Lives Matter movement, can prove that the movement wasn 't meant to express hate on other races and that we need to support the movement instead of going against it.
A close examination of the online representation of a fringe community or counterculture would be the Black Lives Matter movement. The Black Lives Matter movement is a community in America that has represented itself after all of the many innocent African American lives that have taken by law enforcement and the Caucasian male who went into the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church and opened fire on the members of the church. The Black Lives Matter movement has become a worldwide movement for those of the African American culture. According to the website, blacklivesmatter.com, “This is Not a Moment, but a Movement. #BlackLivesMatter was created in 2012 after Trayvon Martin’s murderer, George Zimmerman, was acquitted for his crime, and dead 17-year old Trayvon was post-humously placed on trial for his own murder. Rooted in the experiences of Black people in this country who actively resist our de-humanization, #BlackLivesMatter is a call to action and a response to the virulent anti-Black racism that permeates our society. Black Lives Matter is a unique contribution that goes beyond extrajudicial killings of Black people by police and vigilantes” (blacklivesmatter.com). A personal example I can provide was when I saw the movie “Straight Outta Compton.” This movie showed scenes of the police beating an African American male who was not doing anything wrong. The Caucasian policeman just thought he had the right to treat the
Black people have come very far, but there is still a long way to go that I even consider to be very difficult than what has already done because of a well-designed system to oppress black people. The most known movement of resistance against the discourses of legitimation in contemporary life could be the Black Lives Matter movement that has become a global movement against white supremacy. This is the movement that has shown the resistance to the shootings of black people by the police where Black lives are systematically and intentionally targeted for death. It is also intended to build connections between Black people and their allies to fight anti-Black racism. This movement proclaim equal right, but What’s more problematic is how other
There has been much unrest in the United States over racism. A harsh is drawn in the sand between the two groups. On one side there is the Black Lives Matter movement, which is using radical protest to spark change in the way that African Americans are treated. On the other, there are people who refuse to believe that racism is a problem in America. In my opinion both sides are part of the problem. In order for there to be change both sides need to find some common ground to unite on to solve or to improve the situation.
