Over the past several decades, parents have used different forms of corporal punishment to discipline their child. Many of these disciplinary techniques are effective however, one that tends to continue to be a controversial topic is spanking. Some parents believe this method fixes the behavior, though other parents believe spanking is the lazy approach. Spanking a child as a form of punishment is not a new concept and is used widely however, a multitude of effects arise from this practice, including later marriages and future relationships. Therefore, a solution to end this act needs to resolve this habit. This solution will give tips to parents to choose other discipline method.
When a child misbehaves or disobeys their parent, the adult normally takes on the role of disciplining the child, which is appropriate.

Spanking started in Ancient Greece as a pagan practice and was later introduced to the Catholic Church. This practice in the church was used as a punishment for those who confess against their sins and realize they need their sins removed. The Catholic Church at this time believed spanking the sinner rid them of their sin and they were forgiven. This punishment continued throughout World War 2 as a means for teenagers to understand their sins had been removed. The Catholic belief comes from the Old Testament in the Bible and several still refer to this today. Spanking has also been prevalent in Victorian Europe coming from psychologist, Sigmund Freud’s, theories. Freud had a theory known as the Oedipus and Electra Complex. This theory demonstrates the “children were being sexually abused on a mass scale…in the very strict punishing environment in every home” (Lutton, 2007). Freud had sent this theory to the public and he had lost all his funding. Spanking is a fiercely debated social issue in many countries, such as the US, the United Kingdom, Canada, Israel, and Germany. There are questions over what intensity of pain is suitable until it crosses the threshold into abuse. Up until the mid-20th century it was perfectly okay in most communities for a spanking to cause a child to cry in pain throughout and have difficulty sitting down afterward, even resulting in stripes or bruises for days. Nowadays several think even mere redness of the skin abusive, while others would call it effective discipline. This causes questions as to whether children should be spanked. In addition, whether spanking is an effective method of discipline and at what point does it constitutes child abuse.

Many have researched the good and bad effects of corporal punishment, but there is still much research to be done. Spanking has been used for many years to teach children how to behave. Kids have been spanked with switches, (a twig or flexible branch) belts, paddles, and many other things of the sort. Now people say that the use of corporal punishment, even when using only your hand, is abuse. Spanking is used to help parents raise their children to be respectful and civilized adults, not to harm them and cause them to be afraid.
