In the academic library that I chose to examine, finding the reference desk is no easy task for the unfamiliar patron. With three major entrances and six floors to navigate, this library is an epitome of what most libraries would strive to have: boundless space for patrons and a vast, growing collection. The patron, however, could easily take one glance at this gargantuan building and easily become overwhelmed, despite the services that this one building contains, such as being combined with financial aid, the information technology (IT) center, and areas to grab coffee and snacks. It is my hope that upon observing and engaging with the reference department that they will prove themselves to be helpful and accessible to patrons known and …show more content…
Eventually, I was able to find a seat to left of the reference desk. This allowed me to see the patrons as they walked up to the desk and the activities that occurred in the staff work area. Behind the desk, there are enough computer stations that four staff members can work comfortably at a time. Through the duration of the forty minutes I spent observing the reference desk, there are three people present: one who was absorbed in his computer; one who was obviously bored and playing with his cell phone; and an older gentleman who was roving around the confines of the desk. Between visits from patrons, the staff members conversed freely, even standing up and stretching their legs on occasion. Towards the second half of the observation, one of the staff members retreated into the back room behind the reference desk. In the time dedicated to observing these interactions, six patrons came to the desk, with only two of them having reference related questions. The first patron to approach the desk arrived at 2:40. Clad in a runner’s outfit, she did not look older than nineteen. She must not have realized this was the desk that she needed because as she almost walked by it completely, she did a double take. The gentlemen at the desk did not even glance at her until she was standing in front of the desk. The staff
Working in any organization where there is lack of help, time, and supplies can be quite challenging for employees and management. This seems to the dilemma that these three reference librarians where having. Within this case study there seems to be frustration with the current working conditions, especially the technological support that is needed. The reference librarians find it challenging to complete their jobs when they have to consistently assist in computer problems, leaving the reference desk unattended.
I first walked into the building with my class through the dining hall. The coherent elderly, who could transport themselves, occupied three-fourths of the college lecture room-sized dining hall. Since my classmates and I were in unfamiliar territory, we delivered awkward greetings, but my instructor who frequents this nursing home saluted half the dining hall elderly exuberantly. After storing our belongings away, my instructor assigned all eight of us to a CNA who works in the nursing home. Somehow, she placed my classmates with talkative extraverts, but she paired me with a stoic and passive CNA. How exciting. We introduced ourselves with a rather brief and cliché greeting, and we started working immediately. I assisted my CNA with picking up trash and cleaning the rooms. Due to these simple tasks, I presumed that the day would not be too challenging, but the difficulty elevated when breakfast time for the bed-bound elderly occurred.
Founded in 1899, Northern Arizona University’s (NAU) first library opened with a dictionary and encyclopedia in its collection. Located in the central part of the NAU Flagstaff campus, it provides both physical and virtual environments that foster intellectual discovery, collaborative research, and access to technology (Library overview, 2016). As with most academic libraries, the research collections are critical to supporting the curricular and research mission of the university. As of April 2016, members of the NAU community and public have access to more than 670,000 print and e-books, 81,000 e-journals, 161,000 online audio and video recordings (J. Swann, personal communication, April 19, 2016). Successful learning requires inclusive and widespread support along with relevant resources from the library. Thus, the library offers spaces including group and individual study rooms; multi-media production studios, classrooms, and a makerspace. The library’s mission statement confirms the organization is committed to:
While I was helping out at the library, I realized just how many resources we have available to us students. I also noticed that most students didn’t even know about them, much less how to access them. We had numerous events such as a computer coding workshop (for people of all ages) which I would have gone to if it wasn’t for it being during one of my classes. I was also surprised to find that many of the librarians went to the events. One resource for example, is the online librarian chat where you can ask for help in finding sources, which was especially helpful
Here at Bolt Public Library our goal is to provide a quality service by a full time reference librarian and other trained assistants during regular library hours and are on duty at the reference desk located
I attended the Coffee House session live on November 15th at 8:30 PM to interact with Earleen Glaser of Mercyhurst University. Ms. Glaser is the current University Archivist and Librarian for Mercyhurst, holding this role for the past twenty-eight years. Prior to this role, she was the Reference Librarian where she worked with the previous archivist, Sister Mary Lawrence Franklin. She received her undergraduate degree with Edinboro University and then pursued a Master’s of Library Science at Clarion University, where she focused her studies on reference work. Later, at Mercyhurst, she used her studies to teach reference work to students. When she officially began at Mercyhurst University as the Reference Librarian, she additionally providing
As digital technology has increased the need for libraries and librarians to help navigate the vast world of information available, your Part-time Library Assistant II (Reference) position is an excellent opportunity to people find information and the resources they need.
“Mr. Gorman calls the library the "great intellectual and cultural center" of the academic community. Librarians sometimes call the library a "third place," a reference to a theme in Ray Oldenburg's book The Great Good Place. Mr. Oldenburg, a professor emeritus of sociology at the University of West Florida, lamented in his book that good public places are disappearing in America. Society, he says, desperately needs third places — places that are neither home (the first place) nor work (the second), but spaces that allow people from different parts of a community to come together and engage one another” (“Thoughtful Design” 2). This is something that has immeasurable value, giving something that monetary value could never begin to compare. The third place maybe romanticizing it a little but, regardless it rings true the library is an ideal place for these social interactions to
Public libraries have been around for hundreds of years, helping communities flourish. For many people, libraries serve as a quiet place to do work, a place that offers free information, or even somewhere that little kids can spend time with their loved ones reading picture books. However, there are people who believe libraries can’t keep up with the changing times and will soon be something that exists only in memory. Even though times are changing, libraries still remain a vital part of the community that connects people to others, offers free information and internet access to everyone, and provides help to those who need it. The times are changing, but with it so can libraries.
Glancing back at the nurse 's station, two of them have disappeared. A gentleman is standing there. Speculating, I assume he holds a high position by his attire. He 's wearing a navy blue Blazer, blue and white checkered shirt and khaki pants. It pairs nicely with his navy blue bow tie. He’s talking in depth to a lady that has her hands on
Since their establishment, libraries have served as a gateway to knowledge and services that revolutionized the way the public attains information. Unlike many other institutions, public libraries have grown and evolved along with society by adopting new technology and offering resources tailored to the needs of their local community.
The main goal of libraries, are to teach students how to make use of the resources. The library of NVCC dedicates itself into helping students at the Alexandria campus. That is why it provides a wide range of sources that aids its students. Whether it is for a class, a job, or a research, the library has the materials they need to execute their work. In the words of Robert Putnam, a political scientist who teaches at Harvard University, he said that “People may go to the library looking mainly for information, but they find each other there.” To clarify what is said, people may use the library for information; but due to the materials that they found in their research, they realize that if they made use of the library for their previous works, they would have met the requirements that were needed. The argument presented on this paper, is that the Alexandria campus library has a great effect on students in terms of helping them meet their academic goals. Although, there are some modifications it needs to make it better and more user friendly.
In business settings, people spend an inordinate amount of time and energy in meetings. Regardless of whether the setting is a corporate organization, a non-profit entity, or a small business, meetings are a common way for individuals to come together to share information or to make decisions. In Kirkpatrick’s (1987) book, How to Plan and Conduct Productive Business Meetings, he seeks to dissect the meeting and then reconstruct it in a more productive manner; Kirkpatrick (1987) also provides insights into areas of communication and into how I can create more productive meetings in my workplace.

Today in class we had a presentation. The presentation was on Concordia College Alabama Library spoken by the library director. Her name is Ms. Joyce Kendrick she is a great phenomenal Nerd about books and the library. She has given us a great Presentation about the library.
