The following memorandum contains my rhetorical analysis on a computer science proposal. The authors John E. Laird and Michael van Lent propose that human level AI researchers use video games for AI research. Throughout the memorandum I will analyze what audiences the article can reach and how it can persuade them in a sense. I will also analyze the conventions of the article and where it seems to lose track of its main objective. As well as analyzing how the document correlates with ethos, pathos, and logos. Audience AnalysisPrimary Audience: The primary audience of the proposal is human level AI researchers. These are the main people the authors want reading their proposal. The proposal does a very good job at stating what the reason for the article is and whom the article is meant for in their introduction.Secondary Audience: The secondary audience could be the abundant number of video game companies. Some of these video game developing companies could take interest into what the authors are proposing AI researchers do. These companies could either lend a helping hand to AI researchers or use their own resources to make their own AI breakthroughs before researchers do. External Audience: An example of an external audience could be the players of video games. The authors brought up many interesting ideas that could attract gamers to join in the push for AI research using video games. The authors describe how more developed AI in video games creates different genres. The
LGBT representation is a touchy subject, and Amy is one of the few brave enough to explore the topic. However, she left more than a few holes in her argument, biting off more than she could chew. Her position on the misrepresentation of bisexuals in TV was ineffective at persuading her audience, because of her lack of concrete evidence, misdirection of audiences, and contradictory statements.
All around us there are several different communities of people. College communities, people with similar interests, gamers and several more. Another word for these groups is a discourse community. A discourse community is a group of people whom have a common goal and/ or have similar interests. Everywhere you go, there are different discourse communities. In the article, “Computer Science salaries rise with demand for new graduates,” by Ann Bednarz, she talks about how technology graduates are needed more than ever, how marketing how become needy for technology and how one job can be done by several different technology majors. Bednarz’ article can be applied to a computer science student’s journey. Computer science students are slowly integrating into the business world and in a good position. We are needed by many different kinds of businesses. These graduates are working to make their profile look more attractive. Us graduates are entering a new community and will work our hardest to fit in and become part of the ‘team.’ College is the transition from high school and relying on our parents, to growing up and having to rely on ourselves and become responsible adult, individuals.
In South Central, Los Angeles, there is a food epidemic taking place among the population. For miles and miles, the only easily attainable food source is fast food; causing the overconsumption of un-nutritious, greasy, and fattening food. This is the problem brought to the public’s attention by speaker Ron Finley in his Ted Talks speech, “A Guerilla Gardener in South Central L.A.” Finley explains how everywhere he looks in his native South Central, all he sees are fast food chains and Dialysis clinics opened due to the lack of nutritious food. Finley views the lack of a healthy food source as a serious problem, and brings up

A child’s teacher has taken the child’s parents aside to talk about concerns taking place in the classroom related to the child’s ability to pay attention in class. When hearing news such as this it can be devastating to a parent or caregiver. For this reason, among others, it is important to have a reliable and easily understood source for information. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one such source available for information seekers that readily providers a source of truth. Their sites include informational webpages about important and impactful topics such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This site leverages information sharing using ETHOS, PATHOS, and
Authors who are not from the scientific community appear to be more assertive about their claims as compared to experts of the field. In the following rhetorical analysis, I explore the differences in original research articles tailored toward experts and pop science articles which target a general audience. The pop science article is, “Immune System, Unleashed by Cancer Therapies, Can Attack Organs”, written by Matt Richtel of the New York Times. I compare this with the original research article, “Checkpoint blockade cancer immunotherapy targets tumour-specific mutant antigens” by Gubin et al., published in Nature journal. Both articles talk about the cutting-edge research in the field of cancer immunotherapy. Cancer immunotherapy gets rid of tumors by using the body’s immune system to target cancer cells. Gubin et al.’s article uses genomics and bioinformatics to compare therapeutic synthetic long-peptide vaccines with the working of immunotherapy drugs. Richtel’s article discusses the
The main point of this article is to criticize Trump’s actions handling issues carrying out role of leading a nation. In response to airstrikes and nations varying justifications, the author states in source B, “chaos engulfing the Trump administration that the U.S. airstrikes on Syria had to jostle for public attention with the voluminous news of the president's scandals.”(Boot) This quote signifies the overall theme of the article that the author believes Trump and his administration actions are not sufficient in dealing with Syria. The author uses fallacies such as red herring to divert attention away from the real issue and onto Trump’s personal life. The author’s opinion used to influence readers shown when the author states, “It is hard to imagine how Trump can do his job - for example, approving military strikes on Syria - while drowning in this rising tide of scandal.” (Boot) Source B reveals the
Due to a successful implementation of the rhetorical appeals logos and ethos and the usage of appropriate language, Molly Worthen’s article is more effective than Lisa Wade’s article. The usage of logos greatly supports Worthen’s claim because it clarifies the significance of her argument by providing credible statistics while Wade provides an uncited source to which she proceeds to harshly charge the audience. The application of ethos confirms the applicability of Worthen’s article to the audience and thus improves her eloquence whereas Wade requires further clarification for her use of ethos. Utilizing appropriate language worthy of academic standards positively impacts the effectiveness of Worthen’s article as it accurately depicts the author’s
Credibility is the next rhetorical tool Foer uses in his essay. After reading the essay, I mapped out three different ways Foer establishes credibility.
I was very astonished, when I went to the office hour the first time and asked my professor to give me some advice about my essay. At that time, I had no idea how to specify my topic and analyze my thesis, but my professor gave me lots of specific and arguable ideas that I had never thought of. Then, I started to realize that the ability I am supposed to learn from Writing 39B class is the way to do rhetorical analysis. During these ten weeks classes of Writing 39B, I make improvements on skills of doing rhetorical analysis as well as conveying my message to the reader effectively. To be more specific, I have learned how to analyze an essay from the
While one child receives a new gadget, another receives even more hunger. Although that truth is difficult to swallow, the reality is that there are a few children born into wealth and many others into extreme poverty; worst part is that the vast majorities of those children later lack even the tools to change their situation. An even more gruesome reality is the one that Jonathan Swift faced when he wrote his Modest Proposal in his native Ireland. Besides the lack of wealth, there were many issues such as mothers who were not allowed to work for their needs, or the handcuffing feudal system. Then there was the discussion of how the greed of today is literally destroying the Earth and our children in the process. Such that the children cannot share their gadgets in one country and others share their little food in another country. But Jonathan did say he was open to any other ideas, maybe our present time has the tools to end this inequality. If nothing
A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift was an innovator of the writing style called Satire. Jonathan Swift used an extreme example to make his point. In A Modest Proposal Swift uses the example of cooking, eating and selling the children of poverty stricken families to help make income for the people of Ireland. This extreme example got many people's attention after all Swift suggested cannibalism of young children. That is what Satire is, the use of humor, irony, or exaggeration to expose and criticize other peoples vices or stupidity to make a point.
POP, 1. POP, 2 . POP, 3. It was at that moment that an american terrorist finished his magazine of bullets that he had aimed at all of children and teacher in sight. His assault rifles have firing off at least 20 bullets before he had to reload. The children scattering, hiding and cowering in fear as he began to reload and search for more victims. This has happened one to many time in the last 10 years of american history. Some of the biggest incidences being Columbine, Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech & the Parkland High School Shooting. However no changes were made to our current gun laws to stop this from happening again. The people of this country are tired of seeing innocent children being dragged away in body bags. Two-thousand eighteen is the year that the children and adults alike took to the streets and
In an article written for the New York Times by Jenna Wortham called “I Had a Nice Time with You Tonight. On the App.”, Wortham discusses the pros of using social media in developing relationships. She talks of her personal accounts with dating apps to keep up with her long-distance relationship with her boyfriend and how she finds that communicating with him through video chat is pretty useful for maintaining her relationship. Wortham believes that communication through social media platforms like G-Chat (Google Chat), Skype, Facetime, etc., makes conversation feels more casual and that she feels a closer bond with the people she talks to “physically, even though it’s through a screen” (394). The audience she could be appealing to is anyone
Abraham Lincoln’s “Second Inaugural Address” and Emily Dickinson’s “Success is Counted Sweet,” are two inspirational pieces of art that fall under two different types of discourses. The “Second Inaugural Address,” is a great example and definition of what Rhetoric is. It encompasses all four resources of languages- argument, appeal, arrangement, and artistic devices. “Success is Counted Sweet,” doesn’t cover the four resources of language that apply to rhetoric; therefore, it is categorized as a poem.
