Entertainment! Ruining the society or not? When you hear the word entertainment you think of everything you like to do and/or see. You think about the things you love the most about the society and everything created to make you happier. But there is one question that one will ask at least once in a life time, “Is the things I think of as entertainment ruining the society or not?” Well in my opinion I say yes and no meaning I agree, but in only certain cases. For example, I think basketball is a great sport and helps kids and adults become healthier and less stressed out, but I think Snap Chat, Instagram, Twitter, etc. are all a waste of time and do the exact opposite of what sports do, it makes you lazy and more stressed out. It states, “Studies have shown that staying mentally stimulated can slow the progress of (or possibly even prevent) Alzheimer's and Dementia, since keeping your brain active and engaged prevents it from losing power. Just like any other muscle in the body, the brain requires exercise to keep it strong and healthy, so the phrase "use it or lose it" is particularly apt when it comes to your mind.” These are only two of many different types of entertainment that isn’t ruining the society. Secondly, the sad and boring part, where I tell you about the things you love to do and how horrible they are for the society. And yes that is exactly what I am going to be doing in this paragraph. Firstly, I would like to start off with a fan favorite social media. I am talking about Snap Chat, Instagram, Twitter, and all of the other apps/websites. And yes I did not include YouTube and there is a reason for it which I will talk about later. All of these social media websites are destroying children’s childhood, of going outside with some friends and playing some football or basketball or something. It is eating away a child’s childhood before they even notice it. Instead of talking to a friend in person they are talking to them through a phone and not even calling them, they are texting each other none stop. On http://nperov.com it states, “Constant switching from one task to
One does not necessarily have to cluck in disapproval to admit that entertainment is all the things its detractors say it is: fun, effortless, sensational, mindless, formulaic, predictable, and subversive. In fact, one might argue that those are the very reasons so many people love it. At the same time, it is not hard to see why cultural aristocrats in the nineteenth century and intellectuals in the twentieth hated entertainment and why they predicted, as one typical nineteenth century critic railed, that its eventual effect would be to over turn all morality, to poison the springs of domestic happiness, to dissolve the ties of our social order, and to involved our country in ruin." said Neal Gabler, the author of Life in the Movie: How Entertainment Conquered Reality. I agree with this quote, that entertainment is mind numbing and lessen the values of our society. Back in the nineteenth century, entertainment was something that actually stimulated their minds,
“There was no dictum, no declaration, no censorship, to start with, no! Technology, mass exploitation...”. However some form of entertainment can serve as a stress reliever or just pass time. Some of it can fill our heads with educationally useless information. Also it may shorten our attention span just because nothing is happening in real life at the moment that is interesting.
However it is quite obvious that the overuse of it can negatively impact a persons and even more so, a young child’s wellbeing. I highly believe that social media is stealing away the adventurous and educational childhood of past generations. It is being replaced with advanced technology and over-exposed websites which is speeding up the emotional as well as the physical growth of today’s generation. The excessive amount of time that children spend on social media and technology on average have very negative impacts on their well being such
Entertainment nowadays is like drug. By comparison, drugs and entertainment both mess with your head and likewise, you feel like you’re suffocating without it and it is slowly driving you crazy. For example, in Fahrenheit 451, Margaret relied so much on her entertainment that she gets to a point where she starts to call entertainment “family” and starts saying
Neal Gabler’s 1998 book, Life the Movie: How Entertainment Conquered Reality, brings up controversial questions about the necessity or unnecessary want of entertainment. Scholars may claim that entertainment breaks family bonds, undermines community, and decreases people’s integrity. Certainly, entertainment in the 21st century in the form of movies, video games, and social media are more widespread than ever. However, not all forms of enjoyment are obscene; sports, television shows, and fan conventions can promote social involvement, reduce stress, and improve collaboration skills.
Technology and Social Media In the essays, “Technology Taking Over?” by Yzzy Gonzalez, “The Parent Trap” by Clive Thomas and “This Is Not About You” by Andrew Santella, each of the authors write about the impact technology and social networking have on our schedules and the images of ourselves. How technology and social media can be a big part of our life distraction, we put more attention to our cell phones. Half of the time when we are doing homework, talking to our parents or in class all we do is be on our phones, we won’t pay attention to what we supposed to do or not end up listening.
The first form of entertainment I want to talk about is technology. Technology has become a big thing in our society right now. It is very addicting to many people. I have seen many people that have been overpowered by technology that they have to use it everyday. If these people don’t use it they can become ill. For example in the book Fahrenheit 451 Mildred is attached
Social media is also causing the deaths of many teens and adults because people want to stay with all the new things happening in the world. Social media tools are designed to distract us from mortality and up reminding us in a particularly vivid manner that life is a sequence of losses (Daily Telegraph). Snapchat advertises on one of its filters to not text and drive but people still do it. Many teens distract themselves with social media for others to know how they are living and what they have in life. It's clear that, for teenagers, spending too much time online can really deter social and educational development, the internet world is such that there is alway something new to do and to distract one from one's responsibilities (The Danger of Teen Internet Addiction). Getting addicted to something is very hard to break away from. The internet is a new drug to many teens and adults of society nowadays. Mark Zuckerberg created the social media app, Facebook, on February 4, 2004. It attracted many people to sign up and make an account. Another app created was Myspace on August 1st 2003. Social media has influenced how today's teens look upon life. Teenagers tend to think everything they see on social
Social media is killing you! I know that got your attention, but it is taking your time. Nowadays, a lot of people are using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and so on. Social media is a bad thing for use, so I’m going to be exhibiting to you all about it. Since the Internet has propagated rapidly, social media has progressed a lot. The generalization of the internet makes us to live conveniently and fast. People are using smart phones, laptops or comfortable devices which can access to internet. These equipment’s allow us to use social media easily. It helps contact friends, family, and other people even though they live far away. It could be, however, abused, if you don’t use properly. Especially, it is important that we understand and regulate the use of social media for young children.
The potential of entertainment to affect society is great and some would argue that it has the capacity to ruin society such as Neal Gabler a critic of entertainment who in his book Life the Movie: How Entertainment Conquered Reality that entertainment has the capacity to ruin society. If we look at both more recent iterations of entertainment or even if we look at some forms of classic literature we can clearly see the harmful ways that entertainment can affect people.
Entertainment is the action of providing or being provided with amusement or enjoyment. People seek out many forms of entertainment to seek pleasure and enjoyment in their life such as watching movies and television, reading books and magazines, and listening to music. As much as these things should provide enjoyment to people's lives, sometimes media can have a negative impact on people. A major way the media exudes a negative connotation is though the unrealistic body images it promotes. The media's unrealistic body images is a huge catalyst for eating disorders and can lead to having a very detrimental mind set.
What do you think of when you hear the word entertainment? Do you ever wonder why it’s the way it is? Have you wondered what forces, ideas, and people have molded and shaped it over time? How does entertainment affect culture and a society? These are questions that might have many different answers of varying explanations and magnitudes. For centuries, people have looked to a multitude of different things to do as a way to escape their normal lives and to have fun. So then came various forms of entertainment. Although it may not seem so at first glance, taking a more critical look at the similarities that our society shares with the Brave New World’s society may yield some shocking discoveries.
Is entertainment destroying or benefiting modern society? There is no doubt that entertainment is the main source of amusement for many today. It is used in almost every common man’s daily life, from watching TV to listening to the news. However, entertainment has unfortunately become deeply saturated in people’s lives, to the point where it is no longer healthy or beneficial. The utilization of entertainment has become an addiction, thus giving it the capability to annihilate society. From the adult industry to television shows, one conclusion is inescapable” entertainment is, indeed, a dangerous tool.
A study by Harvard Business Review found that team performance went up 50% when teams socialized more and limited email and eventually, anyone or “operational-only” issues. Clearly, there’s a theme here. We don’t just “become lonelier” as a human race over time. It seems that with the advent of social media, laptops, and apps, we’re choosing screens over personal interactions. According to Time, most Americans from age 18 to 24 check their phone 74 times a day on average. Use of internet has certainly increased the quantity of our mental stimulation, but we lack the quality. According to Forbes, The American Academy of Pediatrics aware the possibility of negative effects of social media in young kids and teens, including cyber-bullying and Facebook depression. Using social media disturbs make deep relationship with others. When they are using social-media we do not need to move a lot. It is okay just to stay. We do not need to active a lot. As a result, it leads naturally mental and physical disabilities. Although social media can connect teens to the world and friends and family around them, it is actually one of the highest-ranking cause of suicide among teenagers in 21st century. People sometimes talks about how social media is becoming part of their world, it is becoming their world. They are unaware of the fact that social media encourages the false images of how everything should be in a perfect world. This not only increases stresses and changes in a normal human life but, it leads to depression and some mental diseases. When it comes to study, a study conducted by Liberty Voice shows that, children have become more dumb, lazier, rude and depressed due to the use of social media. They have been spending
One of the benefits of popular culture is entertainment. First, people are entertained by attending public events. For example, people attend sporting events. For example, fans can attends sporting events such football, basketball, and baseball games to watch their favorite team play. Also, several fans benefit by watching their team play on TV. Secondly, people attend other public events such as concerts of famous celebrities. Thirdly, individuals can be entertained by watching movies. In her essay Shih talks about how movies can be entertaining (389). For example, in action movies such as Mission Impossible there several Hollywood stunts that entertains the people who are watching the movie. Also, in mystery films the main goal is to keep people guessing on what is going to happen like in the movie cube. Next, entertainment benefits society through electronics. For example, people are entertained by downloading apps that allow them to listen to music, play games, and watch movies some examples of these examples of apps that people that are downloadable includes apps such as Candy Crush, Spotify, and Crackle. Furthermore, entertainment is a benefit to society because it relieves stress. For example, if a person isn’t having a great day they can click on a website similar to YouTube and watch funny video such as “ghetto chef” series by a YouTube channel called DashieXP. Also, stress is relieved by watching movies on a site such as Netflix, which features different types of categories such as tv shows, comedy, horror, and action.
