Analysis of Leadership and Followership Reflecting on my nursing career and trying to pick out a situation that would appropriately describe a leadership or follower situation, I decided on a leadership scenario. I most often assume the role of follower and avoid taking charge of situations. Once I had worked a few years in the emergency department, I began to be nudged into the leadership role more often. Working in the resuscitation room gave me a better feeling of leadership amongst my peers. When you become the nurse in charge of resuscitation, running the codes and traumas, people look at you with a different expectation. Daft (2011) describes four significant areas where this type of leadership varies from transactional leadership in chapter twelve, “Transformational leadership develops followers into leaders”(pg.363), and that transformational leadership can be learned rather than ingrained. Personally I have always felt I have been more of a follower and that statement seemed to best explain how I fell into the leadership role easily during the crisis. Focusing on my top five strengths from Strengths Finder 2.0, I’ll start with my number two strength that was adaptability. Rath (2007), describes this strength in part as a “flexible person who can stay productive when the demands of the work are pulling you in many different directions at once” (pg.45). Even though I had little experience with delegation, I managed to assign the roles accordingly and lead a fairly organized trauma. The boy went into ventricular tachycardia approximately eight times, all while his mother stood at the side of the bed screaming for us to save her child. We transfused fourteen units of packed red blood cells following four litres of normal saline just to keep his blood pressure up. I asked that everyone call out what task they were performing to avoid duplication. The supervisor was in charge of consoling and explaining the procedures to the mother as the code progressed, also deciding that she should remain in the room. In the preface of Followership, the author Tom Atchison, states the reason there has to be a dynamic followership and Leadership role it 's not that there 's a lack of effective leadership in healthcare, it’s that the current, worsening, issues are the moral and the staffing shortages of followers which result in a toxic work environment and the challenges on how followers overcome that while being a productive team.

1. When discussing leadership and followership, there is often a split in personal opinion when it comes to which one is more important. Leadership and followership both offer unique benefits in their own right and have supporting factors, which give them the perceived appearance of being more important. The focus for this paper will be to advocate the importance of followership over that of leadership. This will be accomplished by addressing the pros of followership to include some core skills of followership and the effects followership has on the development of a leader. The expectation of an officer however, places a high amount of emphasis on leadership more so than that of followership. Given this perceived importance of leadership as an officer, an effective leadership style will be explained and how officers develop this particular leadership style. While leadership has a distinct presence within the professional work environment, followership is considered the underlying backbone in developing an effective high performing team.

Transactional leadership helps a leader to transactions between leader and followers, and a transformational leader thinks about changing the world, even if only on a small scale (Community Tool Box, n.d.). Although there is no guarantee that either a transactional or transformational leader will be an effective it will be left upon the individual themselves.
Leadership and followership are two sides of the same coin. However, one of these topics is more closely studied than the other. Leadership is studied in the halls of famous universities and discussed in various books and articles. Many of these discussions involve the same question; what makes a good leader? The question to this answer is both the cause, and the product, of excellent leadership, good followers. What a leader strives to create in the company can only be completed by a force of followers with the ability to realize the leader 's vision. So instead of asking what makes a good leader, it must first be asked what makes a good follower. As leadership and followership mirror one another, looking at the parallels between the two may help to answer this question. Leaders are meant to lead teams in an ethical manner in order to realize a vision for the company. Therefore, in order to support the leader, followers must be able to work in a team and help actualize the leader 's vision in an ethical manner.
