Case Study Isabella Miranda Professor Shea Painter PSY-470 March 17, 2024
Introduction This is how things are with Jorge, a Latino man living alone at the age of 59. A drunken fall put him out of commission as a commercial pilot, and he is now on medical leave because of the fall. He served in the Air Force. Growing up in a religious household with his mother and stepfather, he never had a strong bond with his biological father. He started drinking after meeting his biological father for simply the reason being that he liked the way alcohol made him feel. Despite being a college student and Air Force officer, he continued to drink alcohol. He had a heart attack and ended up in the hospital, and his doctors think that alcohol was a factor, from which an Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) may be affecting Jorge, as per the DSM-5. Excessive drinking, obsession with alcohol, or inability to control one's drinking are all signs of an alcohol use disorder (AUD) (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2022). Jorge keeps on consuming ignoring the fact that it's beginning to affect his relationships with his family. He started experiencing memory loss and passing out episodes, reported to his son Guillermo, who explained to the doctor the issues he has been experiencing. Since Jorge is unable to recall what happened after he fell, his loved ones are understandably concerned for his well-being. As reported by Jorge, he denies having an alcohol problem and says he had to go through treatment because his children insisted for his own health. He feels confident in his ability to stay away from alcohol without the help of a mental health professional. Symptoms All of the symptoms for alcohol use disorder (AUD), include passing out, memory loss, and denial, can be observed in Jorge's case. From what his son has shown, it is clear that Jorge's drinking is having a detrimental effect on his everyday health. As far as Guillermo, Jorge's kid, can tell, his dad starts drinking early in the afternoon and keeps drinking all through the night
never seeming to stop. Jorge has also let drinking damage his physical health. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in his memory loss and increasing likelihood of heart attacks. His intoxication not only caused difficulty at work, but it also led to the separation of his marriage and is presently affecting his relationships with his children. There is a possibility of Jorge's symptoms have been problematic because of the negative effects that they are having on his life. Everything from Jorge's health to his social life and professional life has taken damage due to his excessive drinking. As a result, his bond with the people he loves has been severely impacted.  Cultural Factors The primary goals of the sociocultural psychological model are to offer a justification for the means by which norms in society, family dynamics, communication strategies, and interpersonal interactions impact an individual's mental health and behavior (Comer & Comer, 2021). This theory suggests that a person's mental health could be affected by their social, cultural, and environmental factors, which impact their beliefs, behaviors, and emotions. A variety of occurrences have taken place throughout Jorge's life that have set the stage for the growth of his addiction. Having numerous conversations and drinking beers at night, Jorge insisted he didn't start alcohol until he visited his biological father for the first. The influence of Jorge's college fraternity on his alcoholism, however, was a more significant influence on him. His ability to control his alcohol use in this social setting contributed to his increasing fame in university. After graduating from college, he enlisted in the Air Force and completed fighter pilot training. In their free time, Jorge and his buddies liked to drink. In the long run, Jorge's inability to control his drinking stopped him from being the kind of husband and dad his family needed. His issues with family, friends, and coworkers are the direct consequence of his drinking, even
