Topic 2 DQ 2 Find a video or choose one from the "victim experience" document in Class Resources, of a victim talking about their experience and respond. An entire country watched as a poised, beautiful African American woman sat before a Senate committee of 14 white men and with a clear, unwavering voice recounted the repeated acts of sexual harassment she had endured while working with U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas. Anita Hill's graphic testimony was a turning point for gender equality in the U.S. and ignited a political firestorm about sexual misconduct and power in the workplace that resonates still today. Against a backdrop of sex, politics, and race, "Anita: Speaking Truth to Power" reveals the story of a woman who has empowered millions to stand up for equality and justice. Please preview prior to using this video as it contains subject matter which may not be appropriate for all audiences. While watching the video "Anita: Speaking Truth to Power" I was astounded by the courage of Ms. Anita Hill who is a well-educated, intelligent black women with a wonderful career as a law professor. Not only was she standing up against a wealthy political figure, but she was doing so against a man running for the U.S. Supreme Court Nominee in 1991. She is such a brave individual for stepping up and doing what she knew was right, also knowing that her life could be destroyed just by her accusations about the individual. Sexual Harassment was not something that people talked about in that day in age. Thus, Ms. Hill knew that even if she was found to be honest and believed in court that she would never be looked on the same by her colleges and others in the community the same way ever again. One thing she didn't know at the time was how her testimony would help generations to come. "Anita Hill's graphic testimony was a turning point for gender equality in the U.S. and ignited a political firestorm about sexual misconduct and power in the workplace . . ." Without this woman speaking up and telling the truth, people would not have the protections in place that we have today. Reference Anita: Speaking truth to power [Video file]. (2014).
