Disaster Recovery Plan CYB/110 4/22/2024 Ellen Williams
Disaster Recovery Plan Introduction In the case of an emergency that leaves the primary business location unavailable such as a flood, fire, or any other disaster, this DRP will be put into place to guarantee the continuation of business. It will also help with restoring data and any critical systems promptly. Employees will be educated on using the tools for backup and maintaining data. It will delegate the responsibilities of making sure that all data is backed up, maintained, and successfully restored. Employees will be informed on how frequently their data should be backed up and how to protect that data. The DRP will also inform employees on how and where to access backup data, alternative work locations, any policies on backup storage, and communication methods. Tools Used for Backup In the event of a disaster, having multiple copies of data will ensure that the business will continue operations swiftly. This company will implement two backup tools A. We will implement a private cloud backup solution. A private cloud is used for a singular organization. It can be remote or local and be managed internally or outsourced (EC-Council). There are several cloud-based backup sites including Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, and Amazon Simple Storage. Using this tool will allow data to be replicated off-site and be accessible if a disaster were to occur. B. Using remote data replication which will allow us to copy data to a secondary site or server. This will allow us to not only back up our data but our applications and system as well. We will be able to transfer and run on any capable hardware within seconds (Rouse). Backup Responsibilities and Frequency The IT department will be responsible for managing backups and enforcing a regular backup schedule. The IT department will distribute the responsibility of overseeing backups and testing the recovery process to ensure success. The frequency of data backup will be determined by importance. Critical information will backed up daily or simultaneously while less critical
information will be backed up weekly. In the event of a disaster, this will ensure that the most recent available data will be transferred to run. Data Protection at Rest Securing data at rest is vital to keeping sensitive information from unauthorized users. This organization will implement different security measures that will ensure the safety of stored data on offsite servers. A. Encryption: All data being stored offsite will be encrypted. This will prevent unauthorized access and make sure data is uncompromised. B. Access Controls: Only authorized personnel will be able to access and manage backup data. C. Audits: Regular audits will be conducted of backup sites to verify the integrity of data and security procedures. These audits will ensure backups are being implemented and security procedures are in place. Data Recovery and Restoration The goal of the DRP is to ensure that the primary database is restored and operations continue as quickly as possible. This plan will have a quick Recovery Time Objective of a maximum of five hours recovery time for applications and systems. A swift recovery time will be needed to reduce the impact on operations. The recovery time will be affected by the size of the backup data, the kind of failure, the effectiveness of the backup plan, and communication. Not having a quick recovery will negatively affect operations and can lead to loss of productivity and profits. The company may lose its reputation as well. Employee Access to Backup Data A key priority to a quick recovery time is providing employees with access to backup databases during the restoration process. Employees will be using Virtual Private Networks (VPN), which will also help to protect data. VPNs help to secure and encrypt the connection between the backup data and employees. Employees will be able to access the backup data from any location with an internet source. Alternative Work Locations During situations where the primary office is unavailable due to disaster, employees will be working from home. Employees will use a VPN to
