Self-Assessment of Leadership, Collaboration, and Ethics Sonia Orellana Capella University NHS5004: Communication, Collaboration, and Case Analysis for Master's Learners Dr. Linda Sperling March, 2024 1
Self-Assessment of Leadership, Collaboration, and Ethics [ In a critical healthcare situation, I faced an ethical dilemma where the decision-making had to balance exceptional patient care thoughtfully served with limited medical resources. In this specific situation, the ethical principles from Levitt (2014) and the workplace policy of ethics furnished me with guidance, which majorly focuses on maximizing benefits, avoiding harm, respecting autonomy, and ensuring justice. The outcomes of these principles combined led me to a thorough decision-making process, including articulation with a multidisciplinary team and attention to the anticipated consequences and broader implications. A patient's wellness was a top priority, and every other action was evaluated from the ethics of beneficence and non- maleficence. Concurrently, social justice is guided by the distribution of resources, which strives to establish equitable access and treatment (Kruse et al., 2021). This comprehensive ethical framework, partly influenced by the professional and physician ethical codes, acted as a guideline to develop holistic considerations as a basis of the ethical response to the challenging questions in the healthcare resource allocation dilemma. Section: 1 Leadership and Collaboration Experience According to the healthcare professionals' code of ethics, in the complicated matter of healthcare allocation resources, my ethical actions first focused on a patient-oriented approach and, consequently, their well-being as the principal concern. Levitt's proposition, coupling the four ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice, helped me to develop an overall decision-making process and structure. The LEADS model, which was nested in this ethical framework, through creating an extra room, enabled us to be conscious of 2
leadership, evidence, accountability, development, and systems thinking (Levitt, 2014). Navigating this ethical domain, a multidisciplinary team collaboration was determined, and a broad range of views was presented. The process of making this proposition an ethical one involved a detailed and careful analysis of possible consequences and the long-term implications, which was done to ensure that the course of action taken lies in tandem with what is ethically correct in the present time and what will contribute to the sustained ethical healthcare practices and the overall wellness of patients in the healthcare setting. Section: 2 Ethics Experience The working code of the ethical standards of the healthcare organization helped set the contextual and accordance-specific outlines reflective of the complex workplace ethics dilemmas such as resource allocation under the given situation of an ethical dilemma. It was a resource that guided me through the maze of complicated ethical decision-making by emphasizing the importance of transparency, teamwork, and sticking to already agreed-upon goals as we struggled with various ethical problems in healthcare settings (ACHE Code of Ethics. 2024). Management was the joint decision-making process involving consultations with various key players. Workplace exposure gave me in-depth knowledge of medical professionals. They guided me on the clinical implications of different symptoms while I got an overview of administrators; hence, they were the ones who informed me of organizational constraints and priorities. The ethical evaluation committees provide a link for decision-making, and the guardian ensures that decisions are ethically neutral and in line with standard and professional rules (Mentzelopoulos et al., 2021). Therefore, the practical and precious instructional tool of the workplace code of ethics was born, which enabled the staff to be thoughtful and faithful to these ethical gray areas 3
